“This Dharma is the most vital heart-teaching of my life— the very core of the Buddha’s Way.
When this Dharma is awakened, present awareness naturally attunes to it.
‘I’ no longer matter—there is no self, and nothing that belongs to a self.
In this state, one is no longer bound by what currently exists."
— Zen Master Hung Chi-Sung
The teaching of " Awakening Never Apart " is the ultimate essence of the Dharma and is also the most essential instruction of Zen Master Hung Chi Sung in his life.
The present-empty nature of dependent arising turns into a single pure thought of great compassion—arising from the beginningless luminosity of the Dharma realm.
When we recite a single verse or all three each day, we directly witness the luminous arising of Dharma-nature. It is like the Inexhaustible Lamp teaching in the Vimalakīrti Sūtra: one lamp lights another, and the light continues endlessly.
Why? Because this is the pure arising of conditions from the ultimate nature of the Dharmakāya. The radiant light of great compassion emerges from the intrinsic wisdom-nature of the Dharma realm. Moment by moment, awakened awareness shines forth, flowing through the Three Bodies—Dharmakāya, Sambhogakāya, and Emanation-Kāya —turning endlessly like an infinite lamp of clarity.
Thus, daily recitation not only awakens the heart, but also kindles the lamp of great awakening through luminous clarity. Let the pure power of ultimate awakening radiate forth, uplifting our families, friends, and all sentient beings. May all beings awaken to Buddhahood, and may this pure energy extend from our homes and workplaces—spreading to the entire Earth, and throughout the boundless universe.
Respectfully recommended by Lay Practitioner Yang Guangzuo:

Author’s Preface
Auspicious Overture
Awakening Never Apart: Jewel Mirror of the Awakened Heart is a pocket guide I composed to support my own practice and cultivation. The teaching of Awakening Never Apart is the most essential instruction of my life, embodying the ultimate essence of the Dharma. As the saying goes, “Rare is it to be born as a human; rarer still to hear the Dharma.” Thus, this very moment is filled with nothing but auspicious Dharma joy.
From this day forward, and in all lives to come, I will carry this pocket guide with me. It is an inseparable part of both my life and my teaching—a true companion I follow and apply in daily life. Each morning upon waking, and each night before sleep, I will recite verses from this Jewel Mirror of the Awakened Heart, both for my own benefit and for the benefit of all beings.
People may ask, “Didn’t you write these verses? Why do you recite them?”
To that, I answer, “Yes, and no.”
Why? On the surface, it may appear that I, this empty appearance of self, composed them through the body, speech, and mind shaped by conditions. But ultimately, that’s not the case. These verses are manifestations of the Dharmakāya of all Buddhas and the pure essence of all beings. They have nothing to do with me as an individual. Thus, the true author is the pure Dharmakāya of the Buddhas and all beings. I do not dare take credit. It is not mine. Hence: “Yes, and no.”
As these causes and conditions Come together, my heart overflows with gratitude —to all Buddhas and to the arising of pure self-nature. The Dharma realm is pure and luminous, and the Dharma Body flows freely and auspiciously. As the Mahāvaipulya Mahāsamghāta Sūtra teaches:
“With or without the Buddhas’ appearance in the world, the true nature of Dharma abides unchanging. Because it is ever-abiding, the entire Dharma realm cannot be comprehended through knowledge, cannot be separated from, and cannot be brought about or destroyed through cultivation.” Therefore, the ultimate reality cannot be separated from us. Just so, Awakening Never Apart reveals that great awakening is never separate from the self—pure by its very nature.
Therefore, when we recite a single verse or all three each day, we directly witness the luminous arising of Dharma-nature.
The present-empty nature of dependent arising turns into a single pure thought of great compassion—arising from the beginningless luminosity of the Dharma realm. Such is the essential truth of “clarity arising within awakening” as revealed in the Śūraṅgama Sūtra. Clear and present awareness, free from differentiation, becomes a sublime condition for pure mindfulness, moment after moment. Transcending the Dharma realm, the Truly Adorned Realm of Reward unfolds, shining forth in the wondrous radiance of the purified heart. Guided by the non-duality of mind and matter, it manifests as pure and subtle quantum information, entering the boundless, illusory reality of radiant emptiness. So illusory and unattainable, it becomes inscribed into the manifest world. This Dharmakāya of radiant emptiness, together with a single pure thought—and even the indestructible purity of mind, matter, form, and breath—unfolds as the countless pure manifestations of the present Dharma realm. This is the very truth revealed in our recitation of Awakening Never Apart—the inexhaustible lamp of luminous clarity. In this pure and luminous expanse of mind, one lamp kindles another, and the light continues endlessly—so that all sentient beings throughout the Dharma realm gradually awaken, and every land in all the worlds becomes purified. This is the radiant revelation of the Dharmakāya Vairocana, the Great Sun Tathāgata—the full realization of the ultimate secret of the supreme Dharma.
Thus, daily recitation not only awakens the heart, but also kindles the lamp of great awakening through luminous clarity. Let the pure power of ultimate awakening radiate forth, uplifting our families, friends, and all sentient beings. May all beings awaken to Buddhahood, and may this pure energy extend from our homes and workplaces—spreading from Taiwan to the entire Earth, and throughout the boundless universe. May natural disasters, conflicts, pandemics, and wars come to an end, and may this world transform into the ultimate Pure Land—for in the eyes of the Buddhas, this is the true reality. Thus, carrying Awakening Never Apart with you and reciting it with a clear heart—anytime, anywhere—is a joyful symphony of great awakening across the Dharma realm, spreading the blessings of supreme merit to all beings.
Furthermore, we should live in true accordance with Awakening Never Apart—whether walking, standing, sitting, or resting, and through all conditions of life, including birth, aging, illness, and passing.
As the Buddha taught in the Saṃyukta Āgama Sūtra:
"Whether a Tathāgata appears in the world or not, the Dharma-nature remains ever-abiding. The Tathāgata, having awakened to complete and perfect enlightenment, manifests, teaches, and clearly expounds the truth:
'This arises because that arises; this comes into being because that comes into being. Conditioned by ignorance, there are volitional formations; conditioned by becoming, there is birth; and conditioned by birth, there arise aging, sickness, death, sorrow, lamentation, pain, and suffering. Such is the accumulation of the heap of suffering. When ignorance ceases, volitional formations cease; when becoming ceases, birth ceases; and when birth ceases, then aging, sickness, death, sorrow, lamentation, pain, and suffering all come to cessation. Such is the cessation of the heap of suffering.'"
With this, we realize that the Dharma nature is inherently present, whether or not Buddhas appear in the world. The Buddha awakens through self-realization to perfect enlightenment and reveals the supreme Dharma of awakening, wherein even the cessation of ignorance is beyond gaining. Thus, the teaching of Awakening Never Apart affirms this very truth: great awakening is already universally present throughout the boundless Dharma realm.
We should bring this practice into our daily lives. For example, reciting Awakening Never Apart during pregnancy brings peace and well-being to both mother and child, nurturing their merit and awakened mind. After birth, even young children can listen or recite the verses alongside adults, in harmony with the “whole-life education” I have long advocated. At every stage of life—conception, gestation, birth, childhood, youth, adulthood, old age, death, and even the intermediate state between lives—one can continue to uphold the profound function of Awakening Never Apart, cultivating both merit and wisdom. During times of illness, we can recite these verses to awaken the body and mind, fostering healing and well-being. Amid work or career development, reciting as circumstances permit can help cultivate wholesome karma, allowing endeavors to unfold smoothly and auspiciously. At the time of death, we may also recite these verses with great compassion for those who are passing, supporting the continuity of their awakening from life to life—until they complete perfect enlightenment. For this reason, I call this pocket guide the Jewel Mirror of the Awakened Heart—a guide for this life and all lives to come, offering enduring benefit across lifetimes.
I have long contemplated the verse, “Merit arises through use—just as wrongdoing does,” from The Fundamental Verses on the Middle Way (Mūlamadhyamakakārikā). In the commentary attributed to Bodhisattva Piṅgala (the “Blue-Eyed Bodhisattva”), it is explained: “There is merit that arises from the use of what is given. When a benefactor makes an offering, and the recipient truly receives and puts it to beneficial use, the benefactor gains two kinds of merit: first, from the act of giving itself; second, from the meaningful use of the offering.” In this way, when we offer awakening to others, not only does it spark awakening within our own minds—it also helps the recipients awaken. When they, in turn, practice with awakened intention and go on to offer awakening to others, a continuous stream of awakened energy arises. Giver and receiver become like lamps lighting other lamps—an unending chain of illumination—swiftly fulfilling the path to unsurpassed enlightenment. This is why I have long hoped that everyone will help share the Awakening Never Apart practice—offering it to family, friends, and all sentient beings. And may those who receive it go on to share it with others, passing it forward step by step, creating an unending stream of merit and awakening that flows without interruption. When all of us embody the highest merit and wisdom, the All Buddha Dharma Realm will shine forth in full brilliance. This becomes the auspicious condition for the unbroken stream of great compassion, the full awakening of all beings into Buddhahood, and the transformation of the entire Dharma realm into a pure land.
I seek nothing and claim nothing—for nothing can truly be attained. I take great compassion as the heart of my life’s vow, continuing the work of the Buddhas. I sincerely hope that those who share an affinity may walk this path together with me, entering the vast ocean of the Buddhas’ Dharma and attaining perfect, complete awakening. May we each wholeheartedly dedicate ourselves to the selfless endeavor of awakening—for the sake of ourselves, our families, our friends, all sentient beings, this Earth, and the entire Dharma realm.
Just as the title suggests, this is an “Auspicious Overture,” singing forth the song of everyone’s true nature throughout the Dharma realm—a luminous mantra of radiant emptiness and serene stillness. As stated in the Saṃyukta Āgama Sūtra: “One who clings to nothing has nothing to seek. And one who seeks nothing awakens to Nirvāṇa on their own.”
This is the arising of great compassion. This is the Dharma nature as described in the following verse:
“Nature enlightenment fully present;
Awakening never apart from the self;
Present awakening complete;
Ungrasping of all that appears.”
May the most victorious vow within your true nature come to perfect fruition.
May all beings become Buddhas.
May the entire Dharma realm become a Pure Land.
Homage to our Root Teacher, Śākyamuni Buddha.
Homage to all Tathāgatas of True Suchness.
Auspiciously, Hung Chi-Sung
